Each of you has a unique, genetically determined odor. Your aroma is so unique that a trained dog can trace your path, undistracted by the myriad of smells with which your spoor has been mixed. The structure of chemosensory communication is wonderfully ancient: coelenterates, nematodes, arthropods, and mammals, including humans, identify themselves and their biologic status by chemistry—the release of specific chemicals into the local environs (1). All living creatures from the simplest algae or amoeba to highly sophisticated human beings identify themselves by chemicals which are recognized by specialized cells that constitute the olfactory system. Each human being has a unique identifying odor linked to his or her histocompatibility genotype. One of my mentors in medicine, Lewis Thomas, suggested 20 years ago that a bloodhound’s nose would be a more accurate method of selecting donors and recipients for organ transplantation than all of the laboratory testing. But no one has taken his suggestion seriously.

Recent concepts about sense of smell, odorant receptors and physiology of olfaction- an insight
The sense of olfaction reached its zenith in development much earlier than other special senses. Olfaction is much more acute than the other senses, exhibits both high sensitivity for odours and high discrimination between them. This plays a very important role even in the social and behavioral aspects of human beings. Recent studies using molecular genetics, electrophysiology and behavioral an...

Background: Olfaction plays an important role in human life and promotes quality of life through understanding various odors. Nasal polyps are among the common causes of olfactory impairment. There are many different treatment options for polyps most notably the diagnosis and elimination of underlying causes. Some polyps do not respond to medication therapy or they relapse, and therefore requir...
متن کاملAcute-onset persistent olfactory deficit resulting from multiple overexposures to ammonia vapor at work.
Impaired olfaction (a functional decrement in the sense of smell) is not uncommon. It is estimated that at least 2 million Americans suffer from an impaired sense of smell, although the actual number is probably higher. 1 The importance of this primary sense should in no way be minimized, since its absence can result in profound consequences. Both personal protection and quality of life can be ...
